Besides its imperial architecture, the first things that come to mind when people think of Beijing are the hutongs and quadrangle courtyards. Like the city's very fabric, these crisscrossing alleys are steeped in everyday Beijing life. With blue-gray tiles and locust trees providing shade, opening the creaking, weathered wooden door to one of these courtyards reveals a self-contained little world. A screen wall blocks outside noise, and the courtyard is bathed in warm sunlight. Pomegranate or quince trees quietly grow in the corners. These courtyards are the warm, solid foundation of this great city and the soul of its history, passed down through the ages and filled with the taste of life.
We took advantage of the uniqueness of this project to give visitors a taste of Beijing life.
The project consists of six abandoned factory buildings from the former Glazed Tiles Imperial Kiln Factory. Decades of disuse left several of the buildings in such a state of disrepair that they could not be restored due to their red brick construction. We retained two buildings with relatively intact structures and demolished and rebuilt the rest. Based on their locations, we assigned functional attributes to each building. For the guest rooms, we designed different types of rooms based on operational considerations and the structural characteristics of each building. Since the buildings are relatively independent, we used colored glaze bricks and water features to create three small courtyards that organically connect the buildings. We designed the colored glaze brick walls to be different heights in various locations. Combined with the semi-transparent nature of the colored glaze bricks, this creates a sense of openness and layering in the courtyards.
We connected two of the buildings with a walkable corridor. Combined with the restaurant's rooftop platform, this enriches the hotel's vertical relationships and allows children to experience the fun of "climbing onto the roof and lifting the tiles."
